Why Arimokko chose a dolomite-bonded panel — inside our Panel-K partnership

There is a sample board on my desk that I keep picking up. It is heavier than it looks, cool to the touch, and when you run a thumbnail across the cut edge it does not crumble the way a particleboard does. I have been making bespoke cabinetry in Singapore for a long time, and it is rare that a new material makes me stop and handle it this often. This is a short account of why we chose it, and what it changes for the people we build for.

The question that started it

Every material decision at Arimokko starts from the same quiet question: will this still be right in ten years, in this climate, in someone’s actual home. Good doors and honest joinery are the easy part. The board underneath them is where most cabinetry quietly succeeds or fails, and for a tropical kitchen that board has to answer to humidity, heat, and pests all at once. We had been looking for something that did not force a trade-off between those and indoor air quality.

What we were looking for in a board

Three things, really. Air we would be comfortable letting a family breathe for years, which meant moving past low-emission grades toward genuinely formaldehyde-free chemistry. Behaviour we could trust in our weather, meaning moisture stability and sensible fire behaviour rather than a resin that feeds a flame. And a fair story about pests, because termites are a real cost here and most boards simply hand them a meal. Very few materials answer all three without a compromise somewhere.

Why Panel-K stood out

Panel-K approaches the problem from an unusual direction. Instead of a cleaner glue, their Krystal Bond™ process replaces chemical adhesion entirely with mineral crystallisation, binding the timber fibres inside a dense matrix of dolomite. That single choice cascades: no formaldehyde to off-gas, a mineral that absorbs heat and forms a char barrier, and a low-porosity structure that resists moisture and gives pests little to work with. The parts of their story I could verify for myself, the weight of the sample, the density of the cut edge, matched the claims, and their material is supported here in Singapore rather than only overseas. They describe years of development and pilot testing behind it, and the board in my hand behaves like something that was actually worked on.

What it changes for our clients

Practically, it means we can specify one board that does not ask you to choose between clean air, a stable carcass, and a home that is a poor meal for termites. It sits underneath the finishes you can see and rarely think about, which is exactly where a good material belongs. An honest note

No material is magic, and I would not want you to read this as a promise of a fireproof, termite-proof, weatherproof kitchen. What we are choosing is meaningfully better odds against the three things this climate throws at cabinetry, chosen deliberately and made plain to you before anything is built.
