Choosing a cabinet material in Singapore means answering to this room, not to a temperate showroom. Fire, moisture, and termites are not separate worries here. They are three pressures on the same board, and the honest way to choose is to ask how one material handles all of them.
Three enemies, one climate
Most cabinetry advice treats these as a checklist of add-ons: a fire rating here, a moisture seal there, a pest spray on top. Our climate does not respect the separation. The same humidity that swells a poorly chosen board also feeds the colony that eats it, and the same resin that off-gasses in the heat is the fuel that helps a small fire become a fast one. It is worth looking at each in turn, then at what it would take to answer all three at the source.
Moisture
Wood is hygroscopic; it drinks the air. At close to ninety percent humidity for weeks on end, a porous board takes on water, swells, and eventually delaminates at the edges where the seal fails. This is the slow, unglamorous failure most Singapore homeowners actually meet: doors that stop closing flush, edges that lift, a carcass that no longer sits square.
Fire
A kitchen is the one room where ignition is part of daily use. The concern with conventional panels is not that wood burns, which we accept, but that the resin binding it acts as fuel and gives off toxic smoke as it goes. The material can accelerate the very event you most want it to slow.
Termites
As covered earlier in this series, subterranean termites want moisture, warmth, and cellulose, and a built-in cabinet against a damp wall supplies all three. A soft, porous board is an easy meal and an easy tunnel.

What it does not fix
A good material is not an excuse for poor building. A mineral-bonded board still needs sound joinery, proper sealing at cut edges, and a dry install; a leaking pipe behind a perfect panel will still cause trouble. And no interior board should be sold as fireproof or termite-proof in absolute terms. The fair claim is resistance, meaningfully better odds against the three things this climate throws at a kitchen, not immunity. We would rather you hear that plainly from us than discover the caveats later.
